I have been interested in photography from a young age - I took my first photographs
with a Kodak Brownie when I was 9 years old. Most of the photographs I make are black & white. Monochrome photography allows
me to express ideas more clearly. I am drawn to the abstract nature and tonality of
the black & white image. It is the perfect medium to allow the viewer to focus on the
subject without hindrance or distraction.I started off with a traditional darkroom, but due to circumstances I switched to
scanning my negatives and printing them digitally. With the latest archival pigment
inks I can achieve similar quality to traditional silver gelatine prints. With Photoshop
one can do pretty much anything with an image, but I limit my editing to traditional
controls that can be done in a traditional darkroom: dodge, burn, contrast, and some
retouching. It is part of my philosophy – a true reflection of the world. But photography
not only shows us the world as we see it – with long exposures we can see the passage
of time in a single frame: the movement of clouds, water and trees. I profer to capture
images on film and I will continue to do so in the future. The cameras I currently use are a Bronica SQ-Ai and a couple of Holgas.
I process all my own film and scan the negs on an Epson V750 Pro scanner. Prints are
made on an Epson 3800 Pro printer.
